We currently have an exciting opportunity to recruit a Senior Data Engineer to join Royal London Group on a permanent basis in Edinburgh or Nether Alderley.


Role Purpose

The purpose of the Senior Data Engineer role is to develop, test implement, and operate data led solutions that meet business and customer requirements.


This requires a breadth of knowledge and experience, drawing on a multitude of skills and technologies to solve problems. We encourage people who are willing to learn and who want to further develop their skills to become well rounded cloud data engineers. We encourage cross learning and invest in training to grow the skills within the team to encourage a strong community of engineers.


Key Responsibilities

  • Working with Business Analysts and Senior Data Engineers to understand data gathering and storage requirements.
  • Working within a team to develop data solutions.
  • Combining data from different systems of record.
  • Building pipelines that transform and combine data into formats that data analysts and data scientists can use.
  • Carrying out impact assessment of complex changes to existing applications.
  • Producing code to Group standards, guidelines and quality gates for given technology.
  • Thoroughly testing code to ensure any issues are identified as early as possible, working closely with the test team.
  • Supporting the safe implementation of solutions to non-production and production environments.
  • Collaborating closely with other members of the team and of the data science team.
  • Contributing to cloud data practice by sharing ideas and experience.
  • Performing peer and code reviews of others’ work.


Essential Criteria

  • Strong data querying language skills (e.g., T-SQL).
  • Experience working with Azure DataBricks.
  • Technical knowledge of Azure data platform components e.g., Azure Data Factory and Azure SQL.
  • Knowledge of building and operating data service.
  • Ability to work as part of a team contributing effectively to your area.
  • Strong problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Strong understanding of the full software development lifecycle
  • Good awareness of agile development practices.
  • Familiar with automated testing techniques and frameworks.


Desirable Criteria

  • Experience in the use of Azure DevOps.
  • Understanding or experience of:
    • Azure Event Hubs
    • Azure Functions
    • Azure Synapse Analytics
  •  Development experience with Python and/or C#.
