A Royal London career journey

Meet Angela. She’s a Workplace Proposition Analyst.

We're committed to empowering our colleagues to focus on their development and progress their careers at Royal London. We have an exciting and varied learning offering including access to a range of tools and sessions.

We spotlight our vacancies in monthly internal news articles, and through our internal community groups including to members of our inclusion networks.

Angela tells us all about her career journey at Royal London.

When Angela joined Royal London, it was a completely new industry for her. But fortunately, her previous role equipped Angela with many transferable skills. After a couple of years, Angela started maternity leave with her little girl. Six months after her return, her mum unexpectedly passed away two-weeks before the country went into lockdown.

"The sudden change to working from home and managing a team, while grieving with my one-year-old at home was difficult. I'm grateful that Royal London supported me to take time off while I worked through the loss of my mum."

Lockdown made Angela evaluate her goals and what she wanted. She'd been managing teams for ten years and felt she could use the skills she'd learned outside of her current business area. She decided a ‘sideways move’ was the best way for her skills to become more rounded and learn more about the business.

"I became a trainer, gaining exposure to new business areas, products and people. I was also able to maintain the elements of my previous roles that I enjoyed the most – supporting the development of others."

Career Confidence at Royal London

Angela enrolled on our Career Confidence programme. It helped her to think about her longer-term goals and how to equip herself to achieve them. As part of the programme, she heard from a variety of external guest speakers and had the opportunity to ask them questions about their own careers and blockers.

"I met colleagues from across the business and found a wonderful support network, which lead me to join Royal London’s mentoring programme."

Angela wanted to continue to expand her network, so also joined the steering committee of our Women’s Network. This allowed her to be involved in lots great projects and meet some incredible people.

Internal vacancy spotlight

"When my wonderful Training Lead, Emma, announced she was pregnant, I applied to cover her during her maternity leave."

In the run up, Angela was lined up for success with a strong handover from Emma. The role allowed Angela to be involved in many different projects and work with people from all over the business. With it being a temporary role, Angela was focused on what she wanted to gain from the opportunity, how to use it to build on her strengths and identify gaps.

Since then, Angela has successfully progressed into two other roles, prompted by the internal spotlight we give on career and development opportunities.
