Returning to Royal London

Meet Conor. He's part of our New Business Case Management team at Royal London Ireland.

He tells us about his experience of returning to Royal London Ireland and why he was eager to come back.

We encourage and support colleagues to grow and develop their career. Sometimes this means leaving us to explore new experiences and different roles, but we always aim to stay connected and find opportunities for them to return.

My name is Conor and I’ve recently returned to the New Business Case Management Team at Royal London Ireland. I previously worked in this role before leaving to move to Canada.

I was already considering moving abroad when I joined but, despite this, when the time came to inform my manager that I was leaving to go travelling, it was bittersweet. As excited as I was about going to Canada, I’d enjoyed my time at Royal London Ireland so much that I was sad to leave. At the time, I expected to be in Canada for a few years. However, I soon realised it wasn’t the right move for me, and I came back home at the end of the year.

"I can confidently say I’ve never found a work culture as supportive and enjoyable as here."

I looked at the Royal London careers site before checking any other job sites, as I was eager to return because of how much I enjoyed my time here. I was delighted to see that my old team was looking for a Case Manager, and I immediately reached out to my old team leaders. I explained that I was coming home and would be interested in re-joining, and they could not have been more supportive in welcoming me back into the team.

Supportive work culture

There are several reasons why I was delighted to come back. Having worked in several companies in Ireland, I can confidently say I’ve never found a work culture as supportive and enjoyable as here.

Within a few days of joining the company the first time around, I was offered advice on things like setting up my pension and who to contact about the Cycle to Work scheme. I was asked if I’d like to join football group chats, and invited to join the Leisure & Pleasure Club, which puts on great events.

I received help from colleagues across the Royal London Group, and felt everyone volunteered their experience and knowledge freely. This is why one of our People Commitments for 2024 is ‘Connected Community’.

Career progression and opportunities

There were new faces when I returned who had joined from other teams, and some former colleagues had moved into new roles within the company. One of the great things about the culture is that career progression is supported, and colleagues are encouraged to spend time with members of other teams to gain a broader understanding of different roles. It’s great to know that I’d be supported in the future if I wanted to experience different roles and teams.

The training and support provided to everyone at Royal London is wonderful. While I had plenty of experience in the Financial Services sector prior to joining Royal London Ireland, I’d never worked with protection products, and I received lots of training and support. My team leader regularly checked in with me to see how I was getting on, and we had informal one-to-ones throughout my training. Similarly, now that I’ve returned and need some refresher training, I don’t feel rushed to get back to the level of expertise that I was at previously. This is part of our commitment to get things right the first time, making sure everyone has the appropriate training to do their job and deliver the right outcomes for customers.
