Finding the right career path

Meet Katie. She started working in our People team in 2017 and was more recently promoted to Associate Responsible Investment   Director for our asset management business. Find out about Katies’ career progression journey at Royal London.

I started my career at Royal London in the Payroll team before I joined the Responsible Investment team at Royal London Asset Management. Following an 18-month rotation in the Responsible Investment Academy, I was promoted to Associate Responsible Investment Director.

My transition into a new role

The Responsible Investment team was advertising for five people to be a part of the Responsible Investment Academy, and my application was successful. I took part in an 18-month rotation in three different teams. Once completed, I secured a place in the Client and Commercial team where I was promoted to my current role. I work closely with investment teams and colleagues to support our clients’ Responsible Investment needs and ensure the commercial success of Royal London Asset Management.

Skills and support

When I joined the Client and Commercial team, I realised that this is where my problem-solving and communication skills could truly shine. The Responsible Investment team were incredibly supportive of the Academy when we joined and gave up a lot of time to train us.

My role is very collaborative, I work with lots of different teams across the Royal London Group and find there are lots of knowledgeable people willing to help. I've built many great relationships over the years and hope to build many more in the future.

My career progression advice

We all have different skills, which is what makes a business work well – so don’t compare yourself to others. Don’t panic if you haven’t found your place yet. Try different things, put your hand up for tasks you find interesting, and you'll start to see what type of role you should be in. Finally, never be afraid to ask for help and guidance along the way.
