We’re looking for a Lead Software Engineer to join our Long-Standing Customer Group Technology and Change function at Royal London.

 

This is a great opportunity for an experienced technical leader to play a key role in designing and delivering high‑quality software solutions that meet business and customer needs.

 

Reporting to a Technical Lead, you’ll provide Oracle technical expertise and strong leadership within your specialist area, supporting teams to design, develop, test and implement robust, efficient solutions. 

 

 

About the role 

 

  • Leading the delivery of complex technical solutions within your area of expertise, ensuring code meets agreed standards, guidelines and quality gates. 
  • Taking accountability for the design, development, testing and safe implementation of software solutions into production environments. 
  • Carrying out impact assessments for complex changes to existing applications and ensuring design is agreed and documented before development begins. 
  • Providing expert technical advice, guidance and leadership to software developers, both proactively and reactively. 
  • Reviewing others’ work and contributing to the setting of objectives for developers within the team. 
  • Working closely with testing teams to ensure issues are identified early and solutions are thoroughly validated. 
  • Encouraging strong collaboration across disciplines and managing dependencies with other teams. 
  • Contributing to the wider software development community by sharing knowledge, experience and driving continuous improvement. 

 

About you 

 

You’ll bring strong technical capability and leadership experience, along with: 

  • Deep technical knowledge of Oracle SQL and PL/SQL . 
  • Proven experience delivering high‑quality software solutions across the full software development lifecycle. 
  • Proven focus on code quality and unit testing (developer-owned testing) 
  • Ability to work effectively in legacy/complex codebases and follow established patterns/standards 
  • Confident communicator, able to explain logic and expected outcomes to test teams, BAs and other stakeholders 
  • The ability to lead, coach and support other developers while managing your own workload effectively. 
  • Experience working within agile or iterative development environments. 
  • Confidence making technical decisions, influencing others and ensuring best practice is followed. 

 

You’ll also demonstrate a collaborative and accountable approach, taking ownership of your development and contributing positively to team culture, delivery and continuous improvement.
