Job Description

Job Title: Platform Engineer (Developer Experience)

Contract Type: Permanent

Location: Alderley Edge OR Edinburgh

Working style: Hybrid 50% home/office based

Closing date: 13th March 2026

We're hiring a Platform Engineer to join our Developer Experience team — the group that empowers every engineer at Royal London to build, ship, and innovate faster.

You’ll help evolve our core development platforms, from GitHub and Azure DevOps to CI/CD agents, package repositories, Dev Boxes, and rollout and stewardship of GitHub Copilot. You’ll also play a key role as we expand into container platforms and creation of our Internal Developer Platform.

Developer Experience is part of Core Engineering, providing shared platforms, standards, and automation used across product teams. You will work across modern SaaS, cloud and platform technologies, helping teams design and deliver services that are secure, resilient, and observable by default. What you build will be used by dozens of teams across Royal London.

While our team owns a broad suite of developercentric technologies, we’re not looking for someone who already has expertise in all of them. We’re hiring for potential, so experience with some, plus a willingness to grow, is exactly what we’re after.

About the role

  • Operate and improve our source control and CI/CD platforms (GitHub, Azure DevOps), including repo governance, reusable pipeline templates, and policy gates.
  • Provision and optimise selfhosted build agents/runners for performance, security, and cost.
  • Run package management services and strengthen software supplychain practices.
  • Evolve our Internal Developer Platform — golden paths and selfservice that remove toil.
  • Lead the enterprise rollout, policy, onboarding, and enablement for GitHub Copilot.
  • Help expand our container capabilities with secure, observable, pavedroad patterns.
  • Drive automation and InfrastructureasCode across everything we manage; support incidents/requests to keep platforms reliable.

About you

Must Have

  • Experience with GitHub/Azure DevOps and building robust CI/CD pipelines.
  • Understanding of Git fundamentals and repo governance at scale; automation around PRs, branching, compliance checks.
  • A bias for automation (IaC, scripting using a languages such as PowerShell or Python) and great collaboration skills.

Desirable Skills

  • Knowhow in provisioning/tuning build agents or runners.
  • Operating package/artefact services (e.g. Azure Artifacts, GitHub Packages, Artifactory) with a supplychain mindset.
  • Practical exposure to developer tooling with a thorough knowledge of the Software Delivery Lifecycle, and an interest in responsible AIassisted development.
  • Containers experience and an eagerness to work with Kubernetes on Azure.
  • Experience building blocks for an Internal Developer Platform (golden paths, templates, portal).
