The Group Data Office (GDO) is responsible for enhancing the effectiveness of how data is used across Royal London (RL). The function provides Data Governance, Data Management, Data Strategy, Analytics/AI and Insight capabilities. It sets and oversees data related policies and standards, so data is collected, processed, and exploited in accordance with the Group’s risk appetite.
About the Role
Royal London is seeking experienced data modellers with extensive data warehouse design skills to join a newly formed Core Engineering team who play a pivotal part in the data engineering, modelling and data structure design across Royal London’s Enterprise Data Platform (EDP) which is being built on out Azure Databricks.
The EDP is a Data Lakehouse built using the Databricks Medalion architecture and consists of a relational core ‘silver’ layer with a variety of dimensional, de-normalised and relational structured data products being exposed for consumption through the ‘Gold’ layer.
This opportunity gives the right candidates a superb opportunity to be involved in the design of a strategic data platform leveraging all the hard-earned data modelling and design skills acquired on other platforms but brought right up to date with the latest cloud based data technologies.

About the Role
- Hands on data modelling and data structure design role with the EDP Core Engineering team. A key member of the team providing design and delivery on a number of data modelling\design engagement across the EDP.
- Applies expert data modelling knowledge at all levels (conceptual, logical and physical), plus physical warehouse\data lakehouse data structure design experience within an Agile development environment.
- Working potentially over multiple projects at any one time, so ability to multi-task and balance competing priorities important.
- Defines the data mapping and transforms from source to target entities in the data model, working closely with data engineers, source system SMEs and technical BAs.
About You
- Data Modelling\Design Expertise: Demonstrable experience and expertise of all levels of data modelling – conceptual, logical and physical and the various data design techniques used in modern data platforms including as relational, dimensional, data-vault and de-normalised big table and the correct application of each approach. Must have the skill level required to support agile development teams building out data products using any of these techniques.
- Proven Experience: Demonstrates a proven track record in data modelling for complex, multi-vendor programmes and matrix-led engagements.
- Pragmatic approach: always focused on delivering business value and balancing the trade-offs between design purity and value delivery.
- Excellent interpersonal skills: ability to clearly explain complex data modelling and data design concepts to others in the technical team and those in senior less technical roles.
- Ability to work closely with third-party authorities and MSA suppliers\partners and has a good understanding of regulations and legislation within the financial services market.
- Technical Proficiency: Skilled in building and maintaining data models using data modelling tools (Idera ER/Studio or similar).
- Expert level SQL skills required.
- Data engineering\data pipeline experience, with hands on experience on integration tools such as Azure Databricks Notebooks, Azure Data Factory or PySpark. Python extremely beneficial.
