Here's Rekha's story about her positive experience of working in a diverse, collaborative and supportive environment as a woman in technology.
I joined Royal London in September 2023 and have found immense satisfaction in my role as a Senior Applications Developer and Maintenance Engineer within the Technology function. Working in a fully agile environment, I engage with various technologies to craft the front end and back end of software products.

It's a collaborative effort where everyone contributes their expertise, from the initial stages of gathering requirements to the final delivery of software into the production environment. The team includes essential roles such as Scrum Masters, Product Owners, Business Analysts, Test Engineers, a group of Senior Developers, and a Lead Developer. This allows us to have shared responsibility, prevents any individual from shouldering tasks beyond their area of expertise, and contributes to a stress-free work environment.
Work-life balance at Royal London
Balancing work and personal life, especially as a woman with two young children, is a challenging feat. However, Royal London has proven to be an ideal workplace that supports a healthy work-life balance. The flexibility offered through a hybrid working pattern, allowing for both remote and office work, has been instrumental in maintaining my mental health and overall wellbeing.
A diverse workplace
Unlike my previous roles, where I primarily collaborated with male developers, Royal London prioritises inclusion and is focused on ensuring its workforce better reflects the diversity of our customers and communities. Working with team members from different backgrounds has been brilliant and I have learnt so much. Furthermore, having colleagues who share a similar background and culture as mine is a unique experience, one that I hadn't encountered in my 11-year career in the UK.
