Who we are

We’re more than just colleagues. We’re champions of the mutual mindset.

That means we take a longer-term view on providing the best customer outcomes and the most rewarding careers.

Founded in a London coffee house in 1861, we began as a friendly society dedicated to helping people avoid the stigma of a pauper’s grave. In 1908 the decision was made to become a mutual, and we’ve remained that way ever since.

Fast forward to today, and we have...

What’s a mutual?

Being a mutual means we’re owned by some of our customers (over two million of them), who we call members.

Unlike public limited companies, who are owned by external shareholders, mutuals are customer-owned. This means we generate value for members, customers and wider society, not shareholders.

We use our profits to improve our propositions and services for customers, to maintain our financial strength and to support social impact initiatives. We also share profits with eligible customers, boosting the value of their savings.

Only certain types of policy make a customer a member, like our pension.

So our colleagues are our members too. It’s the reason why we’ve been able to create a unique culture where we’re all moving in the right direction together, to do what’s best for everyone.
